CLÍNICA DO DRAGAO – ESPREGUEIRA-MENDES SPORTS CENTRE, FIFA MEDICAL CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE – is inside FC Porto’s stadium, covering 2,000m2 of space with an adjoining health and fitness club covering an area of 6,535m2.

Celebrating 90 years of medical health services, the team works with elite football clubs and receiving athletes from all over the world.

The clinic has more than 40 medical specialties, including sports medicine, orthopaedics, cardiology, exercise physiology, internal medicine, exercise prescription, sports psychology, rehabilitation and rheumatology. The clinic has the latest diagnosis technology (including MRI and CT scans) and fully equipped physiotherapy (four swimming pools) facilities.

We are FC Porto’s clinic of reference, certificated by the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA) and by the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) and were the first FMCE on the Iberian peninsula.

We invented the Porto knee-testing device (BES Innovation Prize), a unique technology that measures anteroposterior and rotatory knee laxity inside the MRI.

Our know-how in sports medicine has evolved over generations. The first member of the Espregueira Mendes family specialising in orthopaedics was João de Espregueira Mendes, in 1926. His son, J.M. Espregueira Mendes MD, was the orthopaedic surgeon at FC Porto between 1978 and 1989. Currently, Professor João Espregueira-Mendes is the chairman of the clinic, the president of ESSKA Foundation, ISAKOS Treasurer, chairman of the Publication Committee and Patellofemoral Foundation board member.

Acknowledged for its excellence, the Foot and Ankle Department is led by Prof. Niek van Dijk .

The clinic has solid partnerships with:

  • Santa Maria Hospital – first Portuguese hospital to achieve ISO 9001
  • 3B’s Research Group (biomaterials, biodegradables and biomimetics), headed by Prof. Rui L. Reis
  • Abu Dhabi Healthpoint Hospital, a Mubadala company, multi-specialty hospital located in Zayed Sports City, Abu Dhabi
  • Minho University
  • Faculty of Medicine of Porto University (post-graduations in sport: http://cursosmedicinadesportiva.med.up.pt/)

Through our links with Latin America, Africa and Portuguese-speaking countries, we support FIFA‘s health messages within these countries.

We are a cohesive team fully devoted to serving our patients and providing football medicine.
