FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence

New York

The Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City is America’s leading orthopaedic hospital with expertise on athlete health and wellness, injury prevention and recovery.

In 2014, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) designated the Hospital for Special Surgery as a FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence (FMCE). The HSS is one of only three hospitals in the United States to receive this distinction. Home to five of the seven professional sports franchises in the NY metropolitan area, the HSS specialises in the care of the athletes of all levels.  For the past three decades, the doctors at the HSS have served as the head team physicians for a number of professional sports teams, including the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer (MLS).

Dr Riley Williams is an HSS Orthopaedic Surgeon who serves as both Medical Director of NY Red Bull Soccer and the HSS FIFA Centre of Medical Excellence. He has spent the past 11 years developing treatment programmes focused on the injured footballer’s effective return to sport.  Dr Williams is an expert in football-related injuries including: ACL tears, meniscus tears and articular cartilage lesions. Effective treatment of the elite football athlete requires a coordinated effort between the physician, physical therapist, athletic training staff and strength coaches. The HSS boasts an effective implantation of such programmes based on Dr Williams’ experience and involvement with the elite football population in the U.S.

“Caring for injured athletes demands an incredible commitment by the players, coaches, physicians, and athletic trainers,” said Dr Williams. “New technological improvements and care strategies come about every day, but unless the athlete’s medical team is working in close collaboration, the benefits to be had by these innovations may not reach their full potential.”

Dedicated to treating athletic injuries, the Sports Medicine Service at the HSS is one of the most highly respected departments in athletic medicine today. With advanced technology, large patient volume, and special “bench-to-bedside” teams of doctors and scientists, the HSS can swiftly translate scientific breakthroughs into clinical treatments. The service is committed to providing a broad continuum of care to athletes over the course of his or her career. As so many of the HSS’ sports medicine physicians are athletes themselves, they fully understand the value of applying their expertise to taking care of teams, while at the same time gaining greater insight into the causes of sports-related injuries by watching players in action.
