Barcelona

The medical services of FC Barcelona were founded by Dr Carles Bestit in 1971 in order to take care of the athletes, including diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of health problems. They are committed to achieving a high level of hygiene behaviour and promoting maximum sports performance.

Medical care and knowledge comes from several areas, particularly sport medicine and orthopedics, with special emphasis on prevention, early diagnosis, fast and accurate therapeutic action and rehabilitation.

These services are targeted as a priority for professional sections of football, basketball, handball, roller hockey and futsal, but also to those amateur sports practiced at the club, including rugby, field hockey, ice hockey, figure skating, volleyball and athletics, with a total of 2,000 athletes.

FC Barcelona was the first FMCE-accredited sports club for its medical services. They have developed a network of facilities with other sports clubs and hospital departments in order to improve knowledge of medicine applied to sport, with total confidentiality and dedication. There are agreements with several national and international hospitals to evaluate and search for the optimal diagnosis and treatment when a second opinion is needed.

As a part of supporting our athletes there are research and training programs to develop knowledge and skills. There are several research programs developed by FCB in collaboration with outside professionals focused on maintaining the health of athletes, preventing injury and effective diagnosis, to achieve the safest recovery and promote education from childhood to adulthood about how to be good athletes. The main topics are:

  • Muscle and tendon injuries
  • Cartilage and ligament injuries
  • Injury and disease in paediatric patients
  • New treatments (stem cells, PRP, etc.)
  • Evaluation and control of training
  • Concussion
  • Team sports nutrition and supplementation
  • Anti-Doping Code

FC Barcelona Medical Services collaborate in the management of various educational courses at national and international level. Every year, a workshop on muscle and tendon injuries, Muscle Tech Network brings together some of the world’s leading experts in this field.
